3.2 Recent Changes in Total Population

The total population for all cites has increased over the period, except in Kolkata, where the entire population has declined in the last decade. Mumbai and Delhi crossed the 10 million mark in 2001.

The percent change in population from 1991 to 2011 has obtained for the cities to analyze the pace of population increase (Fig. 3.2; Table 3.1). Bangalore has shown the highest percent change over the last two decades, i.e. 99%. Delhi and Ahmedabad have also experienced top percent change of 78% and 69%, respectively. Kolkata has presented the lowest percent change at the same time. Whereas the percent change in population for Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai range between 20 and 25%.
